Panchakarma Program
Experience profound Ayurvedic detoxification, restoration, and lasting transformation through our immersive signature Panchakarma program.
Experience a deeper Ayurvedic reset
Panchakarma, a cornerstone of Ayurvedic medicine, is a holistic detoxification and rejuvenation therapy designed to purify and balance the body at the deepest cellular level. Panchakarma has been practised for thousands of years and is rooted in ancient Ayurvedic texts.
These texts outline the principles and techniques of panchakarma, emphasising its role in maintaining optimal health and preventing disease by eliminating accumulated toxins and balancing the doshas (the bodies governing principles
of intelligence).
At Sukhavati, we recommend a minimum of 7 – 10 days to complete a Panchakarma process. If you wish to come for a shorter period, it will still be greatly beneficial and gently detoxifying, and will be focused more on the rejuvenation process.

THE PANCHAKARMA PROCESS
Three Stages to Deep
Healing & Restoration
Panchakarma comprises three main stages:
The first stage, Purvakarma (preparation procedures), involves preparatory practices to loosen and mobilise toxins. This will begin at home before you arrive and on the first day or two of your stay.
The second stage, Panchakarma (detox & cleansing procedures), consists of the core detoxification procedures that eliminate the toxins from the body.
The third stage, Paschat Karma (rejuvenation procedures), focuses on restoring strength and promoting ongoing health.
Stage 1. Purvakarma: the preparatory procedures.
Here, the body and mind are prepared for optimal cleansing. Various practices and herbal substances are consumed help to loosen long-standing impurities and dislodge deep-seated toxins to make them ready for easy elimination. The main preparatory procedures include:
i). Stimulating Digestion (Pachana)
A crucial step in the preparation phase of panchakarma, involves enhancing the digestive fire (Agni) to help metabolise and eliminate toxins (ama). This step helps cleanse and prepare the digestive system, ensuring it is strong and capable of processing the toxins mobilised during subsequent treatments.
During your detox, your diet should be light and easy to digest, avoiding anything that clogs your body’s channels. The menu is designed with this in mind, and the doctors will adjust your diet based on your condition and progress. Treatments used in this phase may include:
- Herbal Pastes and Powders: Specially formulated mixtures of herbs like ginger, black pepper, pippali, and cumin stimulate and strengthen the digestive fire. Consumed as teas, powders, paste or tablets, these herbs help break down toxins and prepare the digestive system for further treatments.
- Medicated Ghee or Oils: Small doses of medicated ghee or oils are used internally to enhance digestion and aid herbal medicine absorption.
- Spices and Condiments: Using digestive spices like turmeric, coriander, fennel, and cardamom in meals to aid digestion and boost metabolism.
ii) Lubrication of the Body (Oleation or Snehana)Â
This phase involves the use of oils or ghee to soften and mobilise the toxins in the body. This process can be performed both internally and externally. Internal oleation helps to loosen the toxins from the tissues and prepare them for elimination. External oleation, e.g through various types of massages, helps to lubricate and soften the body tissues, making it easier for toxins to move towards the gastrointestinal tract for elimination.
iii) Heat Treatment (Swedana)
The next stage is the process of inducing sweating to loosen the toxins further and promote their movement towards the digestive tract. This involves using dry or wet heat externally via poultices, herbal baths, steam therapy, or light exercise.Â
All these steps are crucial to properly preparing the body eliminating deep-seated toxins. Once your body is ready, the appropriate detox method will be chosen for you. Sometimes toxins are already prepared for removal, so you might not need oil treatments or fomentation. In such cases, it’s important to remove the toxins quickly.
Stage 2. Panchakarma: The Detox and Cleansing Procedures
In this stage, a diverse range of detox methods is used to address deeply embedded toxins. These can include internal and external oil treatments, such as imbibing oil or ghee (clarified butter that has medicinal qualities), adding ghee to food, or treatments like oil enemas, massages, ear or nose drops, or medicinal baths. There may also be localised oil treatments to treat specific problem areas like the neck, knees, heart or lower back.Â
Bastis or medicated enemas:
One of the foundations of the success of Ayurvedic detox (panchakarma) is the wise use of Bastis or medicated enemas. This involves administering herbal concoctions via enemas to cleanse the colon, address long-standing imbalances relating to the nervous system, digestion and strength, as well as promoting relief from arthritis, constipation, and lower back pain.
Stage 3. Post Detox Rejuvenation (Paschat Karma)
Once complete detoxification has been achieved, the focus turns to rebuilding, rejuvenation and maximising strength. Here, treatments include:
- Diet: Gradually reintroducing regular foods, starting with light and easily digestible items and following specific dietary guidelines to maintain the balance and digestive health.
- Herbal Supplements: Use of herbal formulations to enhance digestion, boost immunity, and support overall health.
- Rasayana Therapy (Rejuvenation Therapy): Administration of special Ayurvedic rejuvenative herbs and tonics to promote vitality and longevity.
- Lifestyle Recommendations: Guidance on maintaining a balanced daily routine and seasonal regimen along with recommendations for sleep, exercise, and stress management.
Â
These practices collectively help reinforce the body’s natural defences, maintain the benefits of detoxification, and prevent the recurrence of imbalance and disease. By gradually reintroducing normal dietary and lifestyle habits, the final stage of the Panchakarma process ensures a smooth transition back to everyday life, making the detoxification effects sustainable. This phase is critical because it solidifies the gains from the previous stages and supports ongoing health and vitality. This is why having an extra day or two at the end of your stay to just rest and integrate is extremely powerful. Rather than racing to the airport and diving straight back into family or work commitments, guests who stay on just a little bit longer say it was one of the best decisions they made.
THE SUKHAVATI APPROACH
Personalised Care for
a Deeper Healing Experience
Once at Sukhavati, our Ayurvedic doctors will explain specific do’s and don’ts during Panchakarma. These include avoiding excessive sun or wind exposure, getting plenty of rest, and avoiding long excursions or shopping trips. A digital/technology detox is also recommended, as it is often a source of stress and anxiety while shifting your focus away from your goals – the world can wait while you invest in yourself and your wellbeing.
In consultation with you and your desires and goals, our doctors will consider your age, dosha balance or imbalance, digestive health, the stage of any disease, and many other factors to decide which specific treatments are best for you. Depending on your condition, you may undergo several detox treatments, but it’s entirely dependent on your needs – and everything is optional.
A key principle of Ayurveda is that the bliss of the patient is paramount. Everything is done to create more bliss, so even a detox process can be largely enjoyed and be easy when it is done with wisdom – the specialty of Ayurveda.Â
